Ear, Nose and Throat Program (Otolaryngology)

Specialized Care for the Nose and Sinuses

Sinus infections, snoring, seasonal allergies – the list of ailments that can plague your nose is long. That’s why our Ear, Nose and Throat Program (Otolaryngology) includes physicians who specialize exclusively in the care of the nose. Their up-to-date understanding of the structure and function of the nose and sinuses translates into high-caliber medical care for you.

Sinus Care Program

Nearly 30 million Americans suffer from sinusitis, an infection of the sinuses that can cause pain and pressure. Sinusitis accounts for scores of missed days of school and work each year and drastically affects quality of life.

Our Sinus Care Program offers sinus sufferers many advantages, including:

  • Unmatched physician expertise — Our program includes the only fellowship-trained rhinologists (sinus care specialists) in Wisconsin. Board-certified as otolaryngologists and included on the Best Doctors in America® list, they are considered among the leading rhinologists in the country.
  • All of the latest options for diagnosing and treating sinus conditions, including minimally invasive surgery options that offer quicker recoveries and fewer side effects than traditional approaches.
  • A Second Opinion Sinus Surgery program.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring doesn’t just disrupt your partner’s sleep; it can disrupt your sleep and well-being as well. Snoring is one of the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or pauses in breathing during sleep that occur due to the collapse of the airway. OSA interferes with the flow of oxygen to the body and is related to an increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack and diabetes.

Our experts can help you determine if your snoring (or your partner’s!) is more than an annoyance, and, if needed, develop a treatment plan to help you both get a healthy night’s sleep.

Seasonal Allergies

Allergic rhinitis, the medical term for hay fever, affects 10 to 30% of all adults and 40% of all children in the United States. If you experience nasal congestion and/or a runny nose at certain times of the year, you might have allergic rhinitis or seasonal allergies. The experts at the Ear, Nose and Throat Program (Otolaryngology) can perform allergy testing and help you develop (or enhance) an allergy control plan.

Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are noncancerous growths that occur inside the nose and sinuses. They’re not harmful, but they may block airflow, decrease sense of smell and contribute to the development of sinus infections. Medication can help decrease or get rid of nasal polyps, but surgery is sometimes necessary.

Bloody Nose (Epistaxis)

Most bloody noses are completely harmless and stop within minutes. Our specialists help patients with frequently recurring or difficult to control bloody noses. They also work with patients who have hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), a hereditary condition that predisposes them to nosebleeds.

Treatment options include cauterization, nasal packing and vascular embolization, a technique that stops the bleeding at the source.

Sinus Tumors

Cancerous or noncancerous tumors in the nose or sinuses are rare. Our specially-trained sinus surgeons remove more sinus tumors than anyone else in the state.

Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty

Our highly qualified surgeons can perform septoplasty, a procedure to repair your deviated septum (when the divider in the nose leans more to one side than the other). Rhinoplasty, plastic surgery of the nose, can improve your nose’s appearance and repair facial injuries caused by an accident. These procedures are also often performed by facial reconstruction and plastic surgeons in our program.
