Emergency Department

When the unexpected happens, expect exceptional care.

While you rely on Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin for your health care needs, you may not be aware of our exceptional emergency services. If the unexpected happens, we’re ready 24 hours a day to handle all types of emergencies.

The Emergency Department is part of Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, the only academic medical center in eastern Wisconsin, with exceptional physician specialists, state-of-the-art innovations and breakthrough treatment options.

Three Levels of Care

The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Emergency Department is a community Emergency Department serving eastern Wisconsin. Our highly skilled and specialized physicians, nurses and other staff provide compassionate care for people with all types of urgent and emergency healthcare needs, providing three levels of care:

  • Intensive, resuscitative care for critical, life-threatening illness or injury in collaboration with the Level I Trauma Center.
  • General emergency care for medical conditions such as falls, chest pain, shortness of breath, fractures, dehydration, bleeding and severe pain.
  • Minor care for less serious situations, such as an ear infection or broken finger, that can’t wait through the night or until Monday morning to be treated by a patient’s primary care physician.
Recognize stroke symptoms and act F.A.S.T
  • Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

  • Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

  • Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Are the words slurred? Can he/she repeat the sentence correctly?

  • Time: If the person shows any of theses symptoms, time is important. Call 911 quickly.

  • Renovated and Expanded

To provide the highest efficiency in patient care, Froedtert & The Medical College recently renovated the Emergency Department. The Emergency Department is designed to make your care experience as smooth as possible. The patient waiting area offers a comfortable place for waiting family members. Patient treatment rooms are grouped within quiet patient-care areas with dedicated care teams and resources.

Each of the 38 exam rooms is “universal” and equipped to bring services to the patient, rather than transporting the patient elsewhere in the hospital. This helps to reduce time for providing care as well as noise levels in the department.

The Emergency Department also includes an on-site 64-slice volume computed tomography scanner, available 24 hours a day. The scanner is able to scan the entire body in less than 10 seconds, giving surgeons more immediate information for determining treatment, ultimately providing you faster care.

Another enhancement is the pneumatic tube (similar to those used at drive-up banks) extending from the Emergency Department to the lab. This tube allows for faster analysis of blood and tissue samples. Additionally, all staff members wear a special badge that allows instant, real-time communications with staff anywhere in the Emergency Department.
