Eye Institute

Graduate/Postgraduate Education

With its vigorous research program and commitment to patient care, the Eye Institute provides an ideal environment for educating and training the next generation of top ophthalmologists.

Medical College

All Eye Institute physicians are also faculty members at the Medical College of Wisconsin. In the second year of their course of studies, Medical College students learn how to perform an ophthalmic examination. In year three, students take part in limited rotations at the Eye Institute. For fourth-year students, Eye Institute faculty offer month-long electives in ophthalmology (at Zablocki Veteran's Administration Hospital), retinal and vitreous diseases, pediatric ophthalmology and research.

Residencies

The Eye Institute offers a three-year residency program in ophthalmology. The program accepts in three new residents every year; applications are accepted through the Ophthalmology Matching Program (OMP). During the first and second years of the program, residents go twice through a series of six two-month rotations at the Froedtert & the Medical College Eye Institute, the VA hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. In year three, residents spend one-third of their time at the Eye Institute and two-thirds at the VA. Residents participate in more complex patient-care responsibilities as they progress within the program.

Fellowships

For ophthalmologists who want to specialize or who plan to go into academics, the Eye Institute and the Medical College of Wisconsin offer two two-year fellowships, one in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery and one in oculoplastic surgery. Candidates for these fellowships are placed through the OMP.
