  • The Dua Anti-Reflux Valve, developed to reduce reflux of stomach contents in patients with cancer of the esophagus
  • The Shaker Exercise, proven to improve or restore swallowing function in patients with swallowing disorders
  • Development of new treatments for inflammatory bowel disease based on an extensive database of information from patients with the disease
  • Pressure recording manometry catheters used throughout the world to diagnose and manage gastrointestinal tract motility disorders
  
  
• Promoting disease prevention through community outreach programs that place a strong emphasis on screening for cancers of the digestive system, such as colorectal and esophageal cancers.
• Research-based practice to enhance knowledge and treatment on disorders of the digestive system. The Medical College of Wisconsin is a leader in clinical research trials. This team of expert physician-scientists is actively involved in the most up-to-date research on disorders of the digestive system.
• Teaching the next generation of gastroenterologists and hepatologists. The Medical College of Wisconsin gastroenterology and hepatology training program has trained more than 130 physicians. These efforts are recognized and supported by a prestigious National Institutes of Health training grant.

Specialized Care Team

• General gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, such as abdominal pain, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, gas, fecal incontinence, hemorrhoids, nausea, vomiting, motility disorders and gastrointestinal bleeding
• Bowel disease, such as cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) and irritable bowel syndrome
• Liver disease, such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver transplantation evaluation and management
• Diseases of the pancreas, bile ducts and gallbladder, such as tumors, stones, cysts and strictures
• Esophagus disease — gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett’s esophagus, cancer, achalasia, eosinophilic (allergic) esophagitis and diffuse esophageal spasm
