Minimally Invasive ProceduresWhile not every patient or every condition is suited to having a minimally invasive procedure, we strive to offer the option to those patients who will benefit. Whether it involves the da Vinci® robotic surgical system, video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), laparoscopic or thoracoscopic procedures, we offer a variety of minimally invasive options. Such procedures allow us to perform needed surgeries with smaller incisions, and that means less pain and quicker recovery times for our patients.
Board-Certified SpecialistsOur team of three general thoracic surgeons, each board-certified in both general surgery and thoracic surgery, combine compassion and expertise to deliver the best care possible. Some thoracic surgeons may be certified in just general surgery and may handle any number of surgeries. Our surgeons focus only on thoracic surgery, giving them the insight, experience and skill you won’t find anywhere else.
Cancer Center Coordinated CareOur general thoracic surgeons are part of the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, which offers multidisciplinary programs to prevent, detect and treat all types of cancer. The Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary care means that our thoracic cancer patients benefit from experts in a variety of specialities, including pulmonology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology and pathology, among others. We employ both traditional and advanced approaches using appropriate combinations of radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery for each patient. That kind of personalized, well-coordinated care allows us to give our patients comprehensive care that is right for them based on the latest medical advancements and technology.
Hub SupportAnother benefit of the Cancer Center is the clinical and support “hub” it creates around each patient. That means each patient has one person to call for all for their questions. That person, a registered nurse, makes sure that our patients reach the right person to get their questions answered. Because our patients may see a number of specialists during the course of their care, we’ve found it’s easier for them to have just one person to call to have all their questions addressed. It’s just one of the ways we put our patients first.
Tumor BoardThe thoracic (chest) tumor conferences or tumor board includes staff from Thoracic Surgery, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Neoplastic Diseases and Related Disorders. The tumor board is held weekly for physicians to review and discuss cases and develop a consensus opinion on the best treatment plan for that patient. While not every patient’s case is reviewed, physicians may choose to bring any patient’s case to the tumor board. The benefit to patients is that they’re given a recommended course of treatment and they know that all of the appropriate specialists have weighed in on their case. Patients receive the advice of several specialists without having to see each one individually. It’s an added level of care you won’t find anywhere else.
