Gynecologic Cancer Program

Highlights

Research

Medical College of Wisconsin physicians who specialize in gynecologic cancers collaborate with researchers and academic medical centers around the country to advance the understanding and treatment of ovarian, cervical, uterine, vulvar and vaginal cancers. Their patients – and the entire region – are the direct beneficiaries of on-going research. The Gynecologic Cancer Program is an active member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), an organization that coordinates multi-center clinical trials to advance the treatment of gynecologic cancers. The program is also involved with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). Both are cooperative research groups funded by the National Cancer Institute.

Our physicians are also working to establish a Women’s Health Research Initiative and a tissue bank to advance the understanding of female cancers.

Ongoing studies provide access to the best research has to offer in advanced treatments and improved quality of life. Learn more about current gynecologic cancer clinical trials.

Day Hospital

The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center includes the Day Hospital for patients needing chemotherapy, blood products, other types of infusions or advanced services which might otherwise require hospitalization. The Day Hospital offers extended hours, a variety of comforting treatment settings and advanced care support. Its goal is to help cancer patients fit their medical care into their lives — instead of fitting their lives into their medical care.

Patient Education

A diagnosis of cancer suddenly plunges a family into a world filled with medical jargon, side effects and life-altering decisions. But at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, families are never abandoned to the system. The staff in the Gynecologic Cancer Program works hard to ensure that patients and families have all the information they need, when they need it.

Nurse practitioners provide education and support to the families of all patients undergoing chemotherapy. They discuss expected reactions, side effects and comfort measures. When questions arise at home – as they often do – they are only a phone call away.

Registered dietitians are available to meet with patients as well. A dietitian works with women to establish eating plans that maximize health during and after treatment – a plan that respects each person’s likes, dislikes and physical condition. Dietitians also help patients struggling with lack of appetite or nausea during treatment. And because the patient is at the center of our Gynecologic Cancer Program, support staff go to the patient, instead of the other way around.

Support Group

Many women want to share information and receive encouragement from others who are going through the same experience. Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin offers a support group for women with gynecologic cancer. Each group session offers a speaker and new topic, as well as a chance to mingle with women facing a similar diagnosis. Visit our community calendar for more information.
