Angina

Angina is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when the heart doesn’t get enough blood. Angina is caused by coronary artery disease. Treatment may include lifestyle changes, medication, special procedures and cardiac rehabilitation.

The Heart and Vascular Center performs a specialized procedure called transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMR), aimed at relieving angina when other treatments (angioplasty and coronary bypass surgery) are not options. Using a special laser, small channels are created in the heart muscle in the areas responsible for the angina. TMR is a surgical procedure that may be performed through a small chest incision. It is often performed during coronary artery bypass surgery, but may also be done as an independent procedure.
