Pulmonary rehabilitation is a comprehensive, individualized approach to treating respiratory problems in which therapy, education and exercise help patients achieve their maximum breathing potential.
Pulmonary rehabilitation helps patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (emphysema, bronchitis), and other pulmonary conditions. The program helps patients with breathing retraining, cough management, energy conservation, medication education, and stress and anxiety management.
A significant part of our program is education. To manage chronic breathing problems, patients must learn to use breathing muscles more efficiently. It is also important to learn to recognize symptoms and improve general health and conditioning. Our interdisciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation staff develops strategies and exercises to accomplish this.
The program includes:
- Education: how the lungs work and how to most effectively use medications.
- Managing symptoms: importance of early treatment, relaxation techniques and how to conserve energy and prevent infection.
- Breathing retraining: cough techniques and exercises allow for easier breathing.
- Exercise training: how to improve muscle strength and endurance to achieve the best possible physical condition.
Symptoms of pulmonary disorder include:
- shortness of breath in daily activities
- difficulty completing daily activities
- limited exercise tolerance
- frequent hospitalizations
- frequent respiratory infections
