Parkinson's and Movement Disorders
The Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Program offers many programs to evaluate and treat all types of movement disorders. Specialists from many disciplines, including neurology, neuropsychology, physiatry, nursing, social work, occupational therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation psychology and speech-language pathology work together to combine their knowledge and treatment experience to provide the most comprehensive care available.

Evaluation of Movement DisordersDuring a patient’s first visit to the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Program, a Medical College of Wisconsin neurologist — a movement disorders and Parkinson’s specialist — will conduct a thorough evaluation. He or she will take a complete patient history and perform a physical and neurological examination. The neurologist will also review the patient’s medical records and previous diagnostic images. If needed, further testing — such as blood work, imaging (an MRI or CT scan), referrals for various therapies and neuropsychological testing — may be done.
Once all necessary information has been gathered, the neurologist will meet with the patient to discuss the next steps for treatment. Family members are encouraged to join the discussion. Because patient and family education is an important part of comprehensive care, team members devote time to helping patients and families understand particular movement disorders and available treatment options.
Patients may also meet with the program coordinator who, in conjunction with the social worker and team nurses, helps families connect with community resources. Whether the need is a Parkinson exercise group, Parkinson support group or help in the home, the team has the expertise to connect patients and families to services that will improve their quality of life. The program coordinator facilitates the Parkinson’s disease support groups in the community, sponsored by Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin. The coordinator also provides one-on-one education to patients about their disorder and offers support by phone and in the clinic for patients, caregivers and other family members.
