Research Enhances Treatment, Expands Options

The only academic medical center in eastern Wisconsin, Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin participates in national research studies designed to find new, more effective approaches to treating movement disorders. The research efforts are interconnected with the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Program so patients can quickly benefit from any new developments that may improve their care and quality of life. Program providers continually learn from past experience through the Movement Disorders Databank, which allows staff to develop best practices based on successes with prior patients.

The Research Laboratory of Christopher Butson, PhD, Medical College of Wisconsin biomedical engineer, is located with the Neurosciences Center. The work focuses on therapies, such as deep brain stimulation, that cause changes in brain activity. This research incorporates both patient feedback and computer-based modeling to gain insights that would be difficult to obtain using either method alone. The broad goal of this research is to help develop new evidence-based treatments and achieve the best possible outcomes for patients.
