Parkinson's and Movement Disorders Program
The Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Program offers a full range of care for evaluating, diagnosing and treating movement disorders. Staff also connects patients with support groups and other resources to help them live the fullest lives possible. Specialists from many disciplines, including neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, geriatric neuropsychology, physical and rehabilitation medicine, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, dietetics, social work, genetic counseling and nursing work together to combine their knowledge and treatment experience to provide the most comprehensive care available.
Getting Started: Finding a Definitive DiagnosisSince movement disorders have unique symptoms and causes for each person, a thorough assessment is needed to determine a definitive diagnosis prior to starting treatment.
During a patient’s first visit to the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Program, a Medical College of Wisconsin movement disorder neurologist will conduct a complete evaluation. He or she will review the patient’s health history and medical records, review previous diagnostic images and test results, and assess the patient’s current health status through a physical and neurological examination.
Sophisticated Diagnostic CapabilitiesIf necessary, additional tests or imaging may be requested for the patient, taking advantage of the latest diagnostic tools available at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin. This may include the use of the cutting-edge capabilities of DaTSCAN™, an FDA-approved imaging aid that helps physicians determine if a patient’s movement disorder is Parkinson’s disease or another disorder. Neuro-imaging technology such as fMRI and CT scanning may be used prior to surgical treatment if necessary. Referrals to various therapies and neuropsychological testing may also be requested. Learn more about DaTSCAN™ and other diagnostic capabilities.
Charting a Course for TreatmentOnce all necessary information has been gathered, the neurologist will meet with the patient to discuss the next steps for treatment. Family members are encouraged to join this discussion since thorough patient and family education is an important part of successful care. Program team members strive to help patients and families understand the diagnosis, what to expect regarding particular movement disorders and what treatment options to consider for the best results. Learn about our comprehensive treatment options.
An Emphasis on Support and EducationOur program team understands that helping movement disorders patients and families successfully navigate treatment and learn strategies for optimal living leads to better outcomes. In fact, a new patient orientation is held regularly to introduce them to the program, staff and resources. Learn more about patient support.
Community Outreach CoordinatorPatients may meet with our community outreach coordinator, who, in conjunction with the social worker and team nurses, helps families locate valuable community services. Whether the need is a Parkinson’s exercises group, support group, or help in the home, the team has the expertise to connect patients and families with services that will improve the quality of their lives. Patients and families also rely on the coordinator for one-on-one education and support, whether in the clinic or by phone.
