Mobile Prostate Screening Clinic

Employers in the five-county metropolitan Milwaukee area can now make annual prostate cancer screenings too convenient for their male employees to pass up, thanks to a traveling prostate screening clinic.

Operated by Menomonee Falls-based Midwest Prostate Cancer Detection Foundation (MPCDF) and sponsored by Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, the Prostate On-Site Project (POP) mobile clinic can easily be set up in a company parking lot for fast, convenient workplace-based screenings.

“This is a terrific health benefit employers can add to their workplace wellness programs,” said Ken Sanders, vice president of public relations for MPCDF and a former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher. “It’s convenient for employees because they don’t have to travel to a doctor’s appointment and good for employers because it reduces downtime. And healthier workers are a plus for both.”

Froedtert & The Medical College are the MPCDF’s exclusive medical sponsor, acting in an advisory capacity to ensure current screening and diagnostic practices and guidelines are followed.

William See, MD, a Medical College of Wisconsin urologic oncologist and chair of Urology, serves as an advisor to MPCDF. “One in six men will be diagnosed with cancer during his lifetime, and early detection is the key to beating this disease,” See said. “The POP clinic makes it easy to get checked by bringing the doctor to the man.”

The 40-foot POP mobile is a complete screening facility, outfitted just as a doctor’s office would be with two private exam rooms and a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood-draw station. The clinic can handle two PSA draws and two physical examinations at a time.

How to Arrange a Screening at Your Company

Employers reserve the mobile clinic and make payment arrangements through MPCDF, which charges about $50 to screen each man — considerably less than a typical clinic fee. To keep fees low and to cover basic costs such as medical supplies, MPCDF suggests companies enroll at least 40 men in each screening. Screenings take about 15 minutes and are private and confidential. Participants will know the results of the physical exam immediately; PSA test results will be mailed to each participant within a week.

The Midwest Prostate Cancer Detection Foundation is an affiliate of the National Prostate Cancer Detection Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in Mesa, Arizona, in 1997, and dedicated to the early detection of prostate cancer.
