There are two types of stroke. Most are caused by a blockage in a neck or brain artery (ischemic stroke). About 20 percent are of strokes are caused by a bleeding artery (hemorrhagic stroke).
Neuroradiology (Imaging of the Brain)The neuro-imaging group of Froedtert & The Medical College Radiology has earned an international reputation for excellence in producing brain and spinal cord images. In close collaboration with GE Healthcare, the Radiology department has developed the latest computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technology available. The department’s team teaches these advanced applications to healthcare professional from across the globe.
Imaging tests for stroke include:
Acute Stroke Imaging
- “Fast MRI” methods
- STAT computerized tomography (CT) scanning
- Magnetic resonance angiography
Imaging of blood vessels
- Carotid ultrasound
- Transcranial doppler (TCD)
- Catheter angiography and CT angiography
- Diffusion MRI
Cardiac imaging
- Transesophageal contrast echocardiograph
Imaging of brain function
- Magnetic resonance spectroscopy
- Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)
- Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
