Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services

Many stroke survivors require specialized care and rehabilitation to achieve optimal recovery. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Stroke and Neurovascular Program offers the most comprehensive rehabilitation program in Wisconsin.

The Stroke and Neurovascular Program has achieved accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) as a certified stroke rehabilitation program. This means that the program adheres to CARF standards for the stages of stroke rehabilitation and emphasizes the prevention of recurrent stroke. The standards also emphasize positive functional outcomes and education for stroke patients and their active role in managing their health care.

Rehabilitation begins early in the patient’s recovery and is based on the extent of the disability. A dedicated stroke and neurovascular rehabilitation team provides a combination of physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and psychological assessment. Stroke nurse specialists, case managers and social workers round out the team to provide comprehensive, coordinated care to ensure the optimal outcome for stroke patients. Additional services include sub-specialty rehabilitation for treating post-stroke spasticity and neuropsychological consultation for managing post-stroke depression. The stroke recovery process includes access to a number of support groups to help patients and their families adjust to the changes in their day-to-day lives.
