Types of Venous Disease

Venous Thromboembolism, Deep Vein Thrombosis, and Pulmonary Embolism

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) encompasses both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

Deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot that develops in a vein deep in the body, most often develops in the lower legs or thighs, but may occur elsewhere in the body. A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot (such as a DVT in the leg) that travels to the lung. An embolism to the lung can be life-threatening. DVT can lead to pulmonary embolism.

Developing VTE is a risk after any major surgery, but patients who have surgery of the legs or hips are at higher risk. VTE may be caused by many factors.

A prompt and accurate diagnosis is key to treating VTE. A delay in diagnosis can mean long-term disability or death. The vascular medicine experts at the Heart and Vascular Center have the expertise to diagnose and treat VTE appropriately and aggressively.

Aggressive prevention of VTE is also an important part of its treatment. Our multidisciplinary team works with patients to help them prevent future occurrences with medications, patient education and other steps.

Treatments for DVT and VTE vary depending on several factors. Thrombolysis, a catheter-based treatment to dissolve blood clots, is one approach. Read more about our advanced treatment options for VTE and other venous disease.
