Gait and Motion Analysis

The Human Motion Analysis Laboratory (“Gait Lab”) at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, operated in collaboration with Marquette University, is an international research leader. One of only a few like it in the state, the Gait Lab also provides clinical diagnostic services for foot and ankle disorders.

Researchers here have pioneered the “Milwaukee Foot Model,” an internationally recognized model that provides highly detailed analysis of foot movement. It uses special X-rays in conjunction with markers placed on the foot and ankle to evaluate various segments of the foot and how foot movement may deviate from normal movement. It allows clinicians to track the motion of bones in the foot. The Milwaukee Foot Model is used to assess patients before surgery and during post-operative care to track their results. The gait and motion analysis is highly accurate, detailed and unlike any other test in the area.

Using markers on the patient, plates in the floor that measure forces of the foot, infrared lights and special video cameras, a 3-D analysis of the patient’s gait is created. There’s also a special system for measuring plantar pressures underneath the foot pressures inside the shoe with and without orthotics.

Conditions commonly evaluated in the Gait Lab include:

  • Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) or adult-acquired flatfoot
  • Arthritis, especially forefoot arthritis
  • Diabetic foot or diabetic sensory neuropathy
  • Hallux valgus (bunions)
  • Hallux rigidus (stiff big toe)
  • Degenerative foot diseases and joint diseases of the foot and ankle

Our methods are based on engineering and medical advances and state-of-the-art equipment. We’re at the forefront of research in this area, developing, testing and using new technology. Our work has helped change how physicians look at treatment and follow-up care. We’ve helped doctors ask the right questions and measure the effectiveness of treatment, which leads to better patient care.
