As part of eastern Wisconsin’s only adult Level 1 Trauma Center, we regularly treat the most severe hand and upper extremity injuries that come through our emergency department. Whatever the cause or concern, however, patients with hand and arm conditions of all kinds benefit from our expertise. Our collaborative, leading-edge approach by the service’s orthopaedic surgeons and plastic and reconstructive surgeons fosters the successful outcomes that have earned us international recognition and respect.

Comprehensive Care for Common and Complex Conditions

Hand and upper extremity surgeons and staff care for patients of all ages and walks of life. We care for patients with challenging conditions, as well as treating osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, overuse injuries (cumulative trauma) such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, trigger finger, fractures and sports injuries. We are one of the few programs in the Midwest to offer specialty resources for conditions present at birth (congenital conditions), including brachial plexus injury and Sprengel’s deformity. Learn more about hand and upper extremity conditions.

Highly Specialized Surgeons and Staff

Plastic and reconstructive surgeons and orthopaedic surgeons specialize in procedures using intricate microvascular surgery that is essential for repairs. Our physicians are board-certified and fellowship-trained in specialties including hand surgery, upper extremity surgery, microsurgery, and plastic and reconstructive surgery. A high percentage of our physicians were nominated by their peers as the Best Doctors in America®. They work with occupational therapists, rehabilitation psychologists and other professionals to provide treatment options and work toward the best possible outcome for each patient. Learn more about our Exceptional Staff.

Experts Training the Next Generation of Specialists

In addition to caring for patients, our physicians take an active role in training other physicians. Students from across the country and internationally are attracted by The Medical College of Wisconsin’s leading edge approaches and reputation for excellent outcomes. This distinction prompts frequent guest lecturing opportunities at other institutions and at international conferences.

Full Spectrum of Treatment Options

For complex issues, our surgeons are experts in reconstructive procedures including reattachment of body parts (replantation), the repair and reconstruction of vascular systems, nerves, tendons and bones. Surgeries, often including minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures, can be performed. State of the art therapy techniques are used to rehabilitate and increase hand and upper extremity function compromised by arthritis, cerebral palsy, congenital conditions and work-related injuries, especially cumulative disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Learn more about treatments for hand and upper extremity conditions.

Successful Return to Work and Activities

At least four of five Medical College of Wisconsin patients return to work following an injury to their hand or upper extremity. Nationally, it is more common for one or two of five patients to return to work. The experience and expertise of our rehabilitation psychologists and occupational therapists collaborating with our surgeons and patients makes this difference possible for our patients.
