• Basal joint arthritis – arthritis of the joint at the base of the thumb, common in those with osteoarthritis
• Boutonniere deformity – a finger that is bent down at the middle joint and back up at the end joint, often caused by rheumatoid arthritis
• Boxer’s fracture – also known as a metacarpal fracture, this is a break through the bones of the hand
• Carpal tunnel syndrome – occurs when pressure on one of the main nerves of the hand, the median nerve, causes pain, tingling, numbness, swelling, weakness or clumsiness of the thumb and first three fingers
• Club hand – also known as radial club hand or radial dysplasia, this is a congenital hand deformity (present at birth) in which the radius (the inner bone that connects the elbow to the forearm) did not form correctly. The affected arm is usually shorter and curved, with the elbows and fingers stiff and the thumb very small or missing. Radial club hand is most often treated in childhood, but care and prosthetic use can continue in adulthood.
• Cubital tunnel syndrome – similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, but resulting from pressure on the ulnar nerve and affecting the ring and small finger, as well as the elbow
• Dupuytren’s contracture – a thickening of the flesh on the palm, which causes lumps and dimples in the skin and draws the fingers down into a bent position
• Fingertip injuries – bruising, crushing and amputation of the fingertips
• Flexor tendon injuries – cuts or tears of the tendons that operate the fingers, resulting in stiffness and lack of mobility
• Gamekeepers’s thumb – an injury of the joint where the thumb joins the palm
• Mallet finger (dropped finger) – the end joint of the finger bends down and will not straighten itself
• Osteoarthritis of the thumb and fingers
• Polydactyly (extra fingers) – a condition present at birth (congenital condition) in which the hand contains extra fingers or thumbs
• Syndcactyly (webbed fingers) – a congenital hand deformity (present at birth) when fingers are joined in part or in whole
• Tenosynovitis – often occurring in the wrist or hand, an inflammation of the sheath that surrounds the tendon, the cord that joins muscles to bone
• Trigger finger, or flexor tendonitis – tendonitis of the tendons that bend the finger, causing the finger to catch or lock into position
