Nursing

Patient Care Specialty Areas

With our many different specialties, the opportunities for nurses here are tremendous. Nurses who come to a tertiary-level institution are ready for our 'high tech-high touch' environment. Birth Center

The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Birth Center opened in 1997 and is located within Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. This state-of-the-science facility provides the premier level of care, from high-risk to uncomplicated births, in a warm, friendly environment.

Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit

The Blood and Marrow Transplant unit nursing practice includes all levels of patient acuity including intensive care management. Nurses participate in Oncology Core Curriculum class, Critical Care orientation, Chemotherapy, EKG and ACLS certification.

Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery/CT

Serving medical and surgical patients as part of the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Heart and Vascular Center.

Cardiac Catheterization Lab

Diagnostic testing and interventions with a fully equipped electrophysiology lab for diagnosis and treatment.

Cardiopulmonary ICU

Focus is on the medical cardiac patient. ACLS training offered.

Day Surgery

Offers pre- and post-operative care for outpatient surgical patients.

Emergency Center

The only adult Level I Trauma Center for Eastern Wisconsin, serving southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Offers certifications in ACLS, TNCC, TNS and CEN.

Eye Institute Ambulatory Surgery

Working closely with physicians and clinics providing perioperative care, PACU services and telephone triage for eye surgery patients. Offers ACLS certification.

General Medicine

Provides care for patients with asthma, community acquired pneumonia, sickle cell disease, pancreatitis, diabetes and long term ventilator care. A holistic approach is utilized to meet patient care needs for end of life/palliative care.

General Rehabilitation

Provides medical and rehabilitative services to improve the function and quality of life for persons affected by orthopaedic, vascular, cardiac illness or impairments, and traumatic injuries. Holds a specialty accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) as a Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program.

GI Lab

Performs a full range of procedures from diagnosis to treatment of patients with gastrointestinal disease.

Neoplastic Diseases and Related Disorders (Hematology/Oncology) Unit

Nursing staff serves as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team to promote optimal care of the patient. Oncology nursing certification is encouraged and recognized. Chemotherapy certification and oncology core curriculum classes offered.

Medical ICU

Focuses on complex medical patients. ACLS training offered.

Neuro Rehabilitation

Provides medical and rehabilitative services to individuals affected by traumatic brain injuries, non-traumatic brain injuries and stroke. Holds a specialty accreditation from CARF as a brain injury rehabilitation program.

Neurosciences

This unit is an Accredited Stroke Center and provides training and certification for the National Institute of Health's Stroke Scale. The unit serves complex neurology and neurological surgical patients and includes a Neuro Progressive Care Unit (NPCU). The NPCU offers specialty care to specific patient populations with higher levels of acuity requiring more frequent and advanced neurological assessments without the advanced technology of the ICU. Telemetry and 24 hour seizure monitoring is available.

Neurosciences ICU

Focus on neurosurgery patients. ACLS training offered.

Orthopaedics

Provides acute post-surgical care to orthopaedic patients including: trauma, total joint replacements, sports medicine, hand, foot and oncology.

Recovery Room

Fast-paced, high-volume recovery room. ACLS training offered.

Solid Organ Transplant

Serves medical nephrology, nephrology transplant and other (kidney/pancreas, liver and lung) transplant patients.

Specialized Medical/Surgical Telemetry

Serves pancreato-biliary specialty, vascular and very complex surgical cases. Offers ACLS training.

Spinal Cord Injury Center

Provides coordinated, case managed and integrated services for individuals with spinal cord dysfunction in acute, and rehab phase of care. One of two facilities in Wisconsin to receive specialty accreditation from CARF as a Spinal Cord Injury Program.

Surgery

Provides nursing support for 25 operating room suites, including four outpatient ORs. Includes full range of surgical nursing such as transplantation, trauma, cardiovascular, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery and many others.

Surgical ICU

Focus on trauma, transplant, general surgery, vascular, plastics, CT and cardiac surgery patients. ACLS training and trauma nurse course offered.

Trauma/Plastics/ENT/Oral Surgery

Post-surgical unit. Trauma patients/multisystem involvement. Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery, ENT focus on head and neck cancers as well as complex sinus conditions. Oral Surgery.

Urology

Medical/surgical unit provides care to urology, gastroenterology, gynecological surgical, adult cystic fibrosis and general medicine patients.
