Occupational therapy helps you recover from hand and arm injuries, neurological or degenerative diseases and work-related injuries. Occupational therapists teach you how to perform daily activities more independently, increase function of joints and muscles to help regain independence, prevent further disability and educate you and your family on how to maintain gains made in therapy through a comprehensive home exercise program. We provide occupational therapy while you are in the hospital or at a variety of locations.

Occupational Therapy manages issues regarding:

  • Upper extremity injuries / weakness
  • Splinting
  • Activities of daily living
  • Musculoskeletal (muscle and joint) issues
  • Therapeutic adaption/equipment (recommendation and/or instruction)
  • Energy conservation
  • Pelvic neuromuscular re-education
  • Perceptual / cognitive remediation
  • Sensory- motor activities
  • Edema control
  • Biofeedback
  • Wound and scar management
  • Lymphedema
  • Arthritic problems
  • Ergonomics

Hand Therapy and Upper Extremity Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation

The anatomy and function of individuals with hand or upper extremity problems is evaluated. Appropriate treatment protocols are then developed and exercise instruction is used to increase range of motion, strength, coordination and functional use of the arms and hands. Hand/wrist/arm splints can be custom fabricated to position, protect and improve movement in arms and hands. Ergonomic instruction is also available.

Neuromuscular, Orthopaedic and Degenerative Diseases Rehabilitation

Services include evaluation of the patient's current physical, cognitive and sensory functioning as it relates to daily living skills. Patients are provided with appropriate rehabilitation and exercise instruction to gain the highest level of independence possible. When needed, instruction is provided in the use of adaptive equipment and adaptive strategies to improve function and independence related to daily living skills.

Robotic Therapy for Neurological Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation using the InMotion Robot helps patients regain strength and coordination. It provides sensory and motor therapy for stroke survivors and traumatic brain injury patients. InMotion robotic therapy allows for 1,000 of repetitions of each exercise.

Continence Rehabilitation

Specially trained occupational and physical therapists work together to evaluate and design an individualized treatment plan to address patient needs related to their specific continence issues (stress, urge or mixed incontinence; urgency/frequency issues; other bladder/sphincter anomalies).

The patient will be instructed in pelvic floor muscle re-education with the use of biofeedback. Exercise, manual therapy, posture instruction and education regarding dietary / fluid management as well as bladder retraining / good health will also be provided.

Lymphedema Program

A specially trained occupational or physical therapist will evaluate and design an individualized treatment plan to address the patient’s needs related to their specific lymphedema issues (primary or secondary lymphedema, arm(s)/leg(s)/trunk or other body part involvement).

Services include skilled Manual Lymphatic Decongestion (MLD), medical compression bandaging, scar tissue management and referral for compression garment fitting. Patients will be taught exercises for improving range of motion and strength, skin care strategies to prevent infections, self-massage, self-bandaging and self-management home programs. Pre-Driving Assessment

(NOTE - This is not an on-the-road evaluation.) Therapists will perform an objective clinical assessment for individuals experiencing physiological, musculoskeletal or neurological changes which may affect the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Areas assessed include: visual acuity, field of vision, depth perception, strength, range of motion, coordination and cognition.

Results of the assessment will be sent to the referring physician along with recommendations regarding potential for driving and whether or not an on-the-road evaluation is warranted through an independent agency (at the patient’s expense).
