PGY2 Critical Care Resident Alumni

The purpose of this PGY2 pharmacy residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Features

This specialty program is designed to provide advanced clinical training, leadership opportunities and extensive research experience within the critical care setting. Residents will work with a diverse and dedicated critical care preceptor team, who have many years of experience training PGY1 and PGY2 residents.

• Froedtert Hospital is a 710-bed academic medical center with 107 dedicated ICU beds.
• Research projects and teaching activities are tailored to meet the needs/interests of the resident. Grant submissions are encouraged.
• Residents will have the opportunity to precept residents and APPE students on clinical rotations.
• ACLS, PALS, Fundamentals in Critical Care Support and Basic Disaster Life Support training will be provided.
• External presentations and publications are encouraged.
• Research Certificate unless otherwise completed

Requirements for Acceptance

• Completion of PGY1 Pharmacy Residency
• Applicants are required to submit a program application through PhORCAS. Please follow the application instructions.
• Three letters of recommendation, with at least one letter from a PGY1 critical care rotational preceptor that can comment on your ability to work with peers and communicate effectively, clinical problem solving skills, and ability to accept constructive criticism
• In lieu of a letter of intent, please briefly answer the following questions:
  1. Why critical care and specifically why at Froedtert?
  2. What experiences you have had in critical care so far, and why you will benefit for completing a PGY2 in critical care?
  3. Please answer the following about your PGY1 program (or current employer):
     • What is the name of your organization?
     • How many beds does your institution have and how many ICU?
     • Is your institution an academic medical center, non-academic medical center, or community hospital?
     • Does your center care for trauma, advanced neurological, and/or advanced cardiovascular patients?
  4. Please answer the following about staffing:
     • Where is your primary location, patient population, and number of patients covered?
     • How often do you staff?
     • Briefly describe a typical staffing day
  5. Please describe your biggest challenge so far of PGY1 year and steps you have taken to overcome it.

The following are some of the requirements and expectations of participants in the PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at Froedtert Hospital:

   • Completion of a year-long residency project suitable for publication
   • Abstract submission to SCCM Annual Congress

   • SCCM abstract
   • Critical Care Pharmacy Grand Rounds
   • Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds
   • Critical Care Lecture at Concordia University Wisconsin School of Pharmacy
   • Critical Care Nursing Class: Pharmacology Review (two)
   • Critical Care Journal Club (two)
   • Medication safety morbidity and mortality review
5. Pharmacy Staffing
   • Approximately seven weeks throughout the year (Monday - Friday, 10-hour shifts in decentral areas)
   • Approximately 10 weekends throughout the year (Saturday - Sunday, 10-hour shifts in decentral areas)
6. Departmental Meetings
   • The resident is expected to attend all meetings (unless otherwise specified) that PGY1 residents are expected to attend (including but not limited to administrative and safety discussions, staff meetings, etc.)
7. Licensure
   • Licensed as a pharmacist in the state of Wisconsin within 90 days of start date.
8. Other
   • Minimum eight hours/day (Monday - Friday)
   • Complete assignments and evaluations on a timely basis
   • Participate in recruitment for incoming residency class
   • Assist and support department in additional ways as needed
