Monday, March 31, 2014 - Drs. Miller and Wakefield Named 2014 Spirit of Caring Award Recipients

Menomonee Falls, Wis. – Congratulations to Drs. Miller and Wakefield, who have been named the recipients of the 2014 Spirit of Caring awards. The Spirit of Caring – Community Service was awarded to Dr. Michael Miller, while the Spirit of Caring – Excellence in the Medical Profession was awarded to Dr. Richard Wakefield.

The recipients were notified and announced earlier this week in celebration of National Doctors’ Day, which was March 30.

Dr. Miller was selected as the 2014 Spirit of Caring – Community Service award winner. As a member of the medical staff since 1993, his commitment to the hospital and volunteerism makes him most deserving of this award. Dr. Miller gives of his time and expertise to our Community Outreach Health Clinic in the role of medical director. During a past medical mission trip to Honduras, he provided care to individuals in need, demonstrating a commitment to giving back and human compassion. Dr. Miller’s nomination told the story of a man in Honduras who could have died without his quick medical attention and care. “He is very deserving of this award because of the way he lives his life; he is a definite example of caring,” said a nominator. Investing time in volunteer activities as well as delivering exceptional patient care every time made Dr. Miller a worthy award recipient.

The Spirit of Caring – Community Service Award recognizes members of the Community Memorial Hospital medical staff who invest in their community through volunteer activities not directly related to the hospital or the doctor’s primary practice.

Dr. Wakefield was selected as the 2014 Spirit of Caring – Excellence in the Medical Profession award winner. As the current medical director for the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Care Clinical Service Unit at Community Memorial Hospital, his leadership skills are undeniable. Since joining the medical staff in 1982, Dr. Wakefield has served as a member of the Critical Care Advisory Council and chaired the Cardiology Section. In addition to leadership, this award recognizes his service and daily practice. Dr. Wakefield’s nomination came from the spouse of a past patient; it highlighted his dedication to our patients. “Dr. Wakefield was very compassionate and understood our journey,” said a nominator. His roles as physician, leader and compassionate care provider have not gone unnoticed; making him the most deserving of candidates for this year’s award.

The Spirit of Caring – Excellence in the Medical Profession award recognizes members of the Community Memorial Hospital medical staff who have displayed extraordinary professionalism or compassion through interaction with peers and patients and who embody excellence through service, innovation, technical skill, leadership or practice.

The Spirit of Caring awards were established in 2000 to recognize the contributions of Community Memorial Hospital medical staff going above and beyond the practice of medicine. Award recipients are recognized through hospital publications and media promotion. Later this year, they will also receive an award and a monetary donation to the charity of their choice, in their name. Award selection is determined by a committee consisting of representatives from Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Community Memorial Hospital, its medical staff and the community.
