Diabetic Medication and Its Effects on Blood Vessel Function

Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin are seeking individuals with type 2 diabetes, ages 21 to 80 years on metformin, for a study evaluating a diabetic medication and its effects on blood vessel function. The study involves one screening visit (one hour) and four visits to the research center (three to five hours). Stipend provided.

Inclusion Criteria

Age:

Must be between 21 and 80 years of age.

Have you been diagnosed, by a physician, as having type 2 diabetes?
*
Are you on stable metformin therapy for at least six weeks?

"Stable" means you've had no dose changes in the last six weeks.

Exclusion Criteria

Do you have a history of stroke, peripheral artery disease, coronary artery disease (history of heart attacks)?
*
Do you have any major illnesses, such as liver disease, kidney disease, or cancer (undergoing or completed therapy in the last 1 year)?

Do you have a history of pancreatitis?
*
Do you currently abuse alcohol or illicit drugs (cocaine/heroin) in the last year?

Alcohol abuse is categorized as more than 14 beers/cocktails per week for men and more than seven beers/cocktails per week for women.

Are you currently taking insulin or sulfonylurea therapy?

Includes Glimepiride (Amaryl); Glyburide (Glibenclamide, Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase); Gliclazide (Diamicron MR, Diamicron R; Glipizide (Glucotrol, Glucotrol XL); Tolbutamide (Orinase); Chlorpropamide (Diabinese, Acetohexamide).
