One patient has been released from the hospital and one has been upgraded from Critical to Satisfactory condition. The two other patients are in Satisfactory condition.

The patients and their families ask that members of the media respect their wish for privacy as they recover from this tragic event.

A Satisfactory condition status indicates a patient's vital signs are within normal limits and the patient is conscious and functioning.

Critical status describes a patient experiencing a life- or limb-threating condition. Vital signs may or may not be stable.

The following statements were shared at a news conference held Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin.

From Gary Seabrook, MD, director of surgical services, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin:

Following a shooting incident at a salon in Brookfield this morning, four patients were brought to Froedtert Hospital with gunshot wounds to their extremities. All four patients are expected to survive.

Unfortunately, we are becoming all too familiar in responding to this type of incident, and we treat the victims of gun violence every day.

The first patient is in surgery and is in critical condition. The second patient has completed a surgical procedure and is in satisfactory condition. The third patient is being stabilized and will undergo surgery later tonight. The fourth patient has been admitted with injuries that do not require surgery.

Because there was a threat that the suspect had entered the hospital, we instituted a lockdown and extensive search of the building. We are grateful to law enforcement agencies for their immediate response and professional conduct during this situation. We have now learned that the suspect died at the scene in Brookfield.

From Kathy Bagemihl, vice president, Froedtert Hospital:

Today, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department and the Wauwatosa Police Department enacted their protocol for dangerous situations and together we locked down Froedtert Hospital.

We are fortunate to collaborate with our law enforcement agencies.

Once we were assured the building was safe, law enforcement lifted the lockdown.

We apologize for any inconvenience this created. We undertook this action to protect the safety of our staff, patients and visitors which is always our priority. We commend our staff and physicians for the exceptional work they did today, and that they always do.

Again, our thoughts and prayers are with all who are affected by this situation.

Updated at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 21

Today at approximately 11 a.m., Froedtert Hospital was notified of an active shooting incident in Brookfield. We mobilized the appropriate physicians, nurses and operating room personnel to care for the victims. This is consistent with many drills we run to be prepared for mass casualty situations as a Level 1 Trauma Center.

We were fully prepared to handle this situation with staff currently in the hospital. No additional staff were called in.

At approximately noon, four individuals were transferred to Froedtert. We are sharing the following information about these victims:

  • All are female
  • All received gunshot wounds
  • All were transported by ambulance
  • Two are undergoing treatment in the emergency department for non-life-threatening conditions
  • Two underwent surgery

While responders at the scene initially indicated three additional victims would be transported, none arrived at the hospital.

At approximately 1 p.m., the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department advised that Froedtert Hospital go on lockdown. This was undertaken solely as a precautionary measure. There was no reason to believe that a shooter was in the hospital. At 4:25 p.m., following a sweep of the hospital by sheriff staff, the lockdown was lifted.

Again, our thoughts and prayers are with all who are affected by this situation.
