Nursing Professional Practice Model of Relationship-Based Care

The Nursing Professional Practice Model of Relationship-Based Care depicts nursing practice at Froedtert Hospital. A central focus of the model is care of the patient, family and the community. Six elements serve as the model’s foundation, with the mission, vision, values, philosophy and strategic initiatives influencing nursing practice.

Nursing Philosophy

Nurses at Froedtert Hospital support professional nursing practice, which emphasizes:

Message from the Chief Nursing Officer

As the chief nursing officer of Froedtert Hospital, I am thrilled to share the 2021-2023 Froedtert Hospital Nursing Annual Report. Having directed our efforts to the pandemic response, we have had a three-year delay in publishing. While we are moving back to annual reports in 2024, I believe it is important to look back and highlight some of the great work our amazing teams have accomplished over this time.

In every place nursing is practiced, our teams bring compassion and dedication while providing patient-centered care to all who come through our doors. When we stop to think about the work that nursing has done since the beginning of 2020, to say it has been a challenge is an understatement. To all of our nurses who have been a part of our organization and helped see us through these unprecedented times, thank you. Despite the obstacles, Froedtert Hospital nurses continued to shine! You should all be so proud of what you were able to accomplish! 

Practicing, educating and learning through a pandemic is nothing short of remarkable, and we did it. We not only did it, we embraced the challenges, shifted countless times to provide outstanding care and excelled in so many ways, resulting in a fourth Magnet® designation! Exceptional patient care and safety remained top priorities, and this was reflected in the Vizient rankings. Froedtert Hospital was recognized among the top 10 academic medical centers because of our work on evidence-based practice, quality improvements and research projects that continue to enhance the care we provide. 

Throughout this report, we will celebrate the successes, reflect on the challenges and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead in our nursing workforce. Together, we can continue to raise the standards of what it means to be a Froedtert Hospital nurse as we live out our mission, vision and values to achieve nursing excellence. Advanced Practice Nurses

Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are important members of the Froedtert & MCW health care team. They provide some of the same care provided by physicians and maintain close working relationships with physicians.

  • Our nurses are well-trained. Many have advanced degrees or advanced certifications in their specialties and many are active in their professional associations. They are critical thinkers who value lifelong learning, specialty certification and professional development.
  • Our nurses practice in an academic medical center that fosters collaboration, innovation and clinical excellence. They have access to the newest technology and research, putting them on the cutting edge of health care.
  • Our nurses strive for continuous improvement in patient outcomes. That means they continually seek better ways to provide care. They question the routine and, through research, develop better ways to provide high-quality patient care.
  • Our nurses care for patients with compassion and respect. They are mothers and sisters, husbands and brothers, and they know what it means to be a patient or have a loved one who’s ill.
  • Our nurses are connected to the community. In addition to their own volunteer commitments, our nurses are involved with numerous hospital-sponsored community health care and health education programs.
