Description

This class provides you with information to understand how breastfeeding works with your body; newborn behavior and breastfeeding; and making your breastfeeding experience a positive one. This class may be taken early in your third trimester of pregnancy. Your support person is encouraged to attend with you.

After attending this class, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize physiological changes in the breast during pregnancy and after delivery and how the lactation process begins.
  • State the three phases of breast milk production and the importance of colostrum.
  • Recognize infant feeding cues, feeding frequency and factors that may influence sleep/wake cycles.
  • List at least three positions in which to hold a baby for breastfeeding.
  • Describe a proper versus improper latch and how each affects milk transfer and painful nipples.
  • Identify signs of adequate milk transfer, ways in which to improve transfer, and signs that baby is receiving enough breast milk.
  • Verbalize basic pumping and storage guidelines for breast milk.
  • List resources for help with breastfeeding concerns.
