About
Dr. Akhtar is an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology and specializes in the treatment of plasma cell disorders. He obtained his medical degree from the Government Medical College Srinagar in Kashmir. He completed his internal medicine residency training at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine in Buffalo, New York and his hematology and oncology fellowship at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, also in Buffalo, New York. Following this, he pursued an additional year of training in blood and marrow transplantation and cellular immunotherapy at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Akhtar’s research is focused on developing strategies to optimize outcomes of older adults with myeloma, particularly those receiving transplantation and cellular therapies such as CAR T-cell therapy. He has received multiple awards for research and teaching including the Thomas F. Frawley, MD Research Fellowship Award. In 2022, Dr. Akhtar was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in recognition of his clinical excellence.
