I feel strongly that the management of chronic illness is a partnership between the physician and the patient. I will be there to guide, interpret, and make recommendations to patients as they manage their illnesses and transverse our complicated healthcare system. I encourage the use of MyChart, electronic messaging, social media, the internet and other information tools to improve communication with patients and to improve health outcomes.

Dr. Rick Gillis is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, has been in practice at Froedtert and the  Medical College of Wisconsin for over 25 years, and has been on the list of Best Doctors for many years.

Dr. Gillis returned to full-time practice after leading the implementation of the electronic medical record system, patient care portal (MyChart) and other technologies to improve the processes of care over the past 10 years within the Froedtert and Medical College health systems. Dr. Gillis has also participated in the education of medical students, interns, residents, and colleagues as well as held administrative roles in various levels of the Medical College practice.

As an internist, Dr. Gillis is most often seen in the role of a primary care physician, helping to diagnose, manage and coordinate the care of patients with multiple illnesses. Dr. Gillis feels strongly that the management of chronic illness is a partnership between the physician and the patient. He will be there to guide, interpret, and make recommendations to patients as they manage their illnesses and transverse our complicated healthcare system.

Dr. Gillis encourages the use of MyChart, electronic messaging, social media, the internet as well as other information tools to improve communication, educate, and report on your health, all in an effort to improve care processes and outcomes.

MyChart is a convenient connection to your healthcare team that is used extensively in Dr. Gillis’s practice. It allows private and secure communication back and forth with the clinic as well as a view of your health problems, current medications, test results, and upcoming appointments. Additionally MyChart facilitates prescription renewals and appointment scheduling.

Dr. Gillis’ other interests include his family, running, cycling, golf, cooking, photography, classic cars and playing with technology. Many of these interests have grown from a need to help patients gain a better understanding of the management of health and chronic illnesses.  This allows Dr. Gillis to do much more than prescribing a medication or making a referral it allows him to practice a philosophy of caring which encompasses the whole person.

This provider after 20 years of being my primary care doctor, knows my medical needs and cures better than anyone else. I trust his judgement totally, and respect his medical judgment and opinion.

Tracy got things started well with her response about why a pre-op physical was needed for such minor surgery. After arriving 45 min early, I was seen at the appointed time but had to wait 45 min in exam room to see after Dr. Gillis after finishing with Tracy. Dr. Gillis and Tracy did their best to make up for time.

I have been a pt of Dr Gillis for over 20 years and have never seen a doctor I trusted more. He is a wonderful physician.
Dec. 11, 2019
A bizarre incident occurred during my check in for Dr. Gillis. The medical assistant for Dr. Tobin came out to the waiting area and announced in a loud voice to all the patients waiting for him that there was a computer outage that day and there was at least a 90 minute delay to see him. You can imagine the uproar in the waiting area with a number of people angry at the situation as well some of them being profane. The waiting area cleared out with lots of unhappy patients.

Felt very rushed. Did not take time to address my questions in a positive manner.
Nov. 26, 2019
took time to ask questions with me. survey hide this area when I take it on an iPhone. not ideal.
Nov. 8, 2019
sincere, listened and moved forward.

The provider care was OK, but I was extremely dissatisfied with the telephone service in trying to make an appointment. I had to wait 55 minutes before a contact was made! If I was not so committed to Froedtert, I would have switched to another hospital. This critique is directed at Sergeant, not the main hospital.

reGreat Doctor and staff.
Nov. 2, 2019
Dr Gillis always answers my questions and concerns with a polite and professional manner. He offers advice and assistance should additional medical care be needed. I consider him a valuable member of my health care team!

new provider. very good first impressions and shared healthcare management plan.
Oct. 31, 2019
I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Gillis. It is unfortunate that the staffing supporting him leaves much to be desired. It is easier to communicate with Dr. Gillis via My Chart. In calling for the recent appointment I waited 12 minutes and 26 seconds before reaching a person, and then that person wanted a detailed description of the issues that I had already provided via My chart to Dr. Gillis and his office. I hope these comments are helpful. You really need to upgrade the support you provide Dr. Gillis and the other physicians. The recorded messages that play over and over while waiting to speak to someone talk about patient service. Marketing is fine but it does not work if the front office and point of initial contact does not deliver.

Very thorough.
Oct. 11, 2019
He listens, gives understandable answers, clearly has kept up with recent studies (if I cite a newspaper article, he knows details of the studies mentioned).
Oct. 3, 2019
Be very precise about your problems and/or needs. Unfortunately MDs are time constrained by our current business and reimbursement models.

I like my doctor, but do not like his nurse at all. She make me feel that she is so much better. It does make my blood pressure go up every time. I wish that he had the other nurse that he had.

Dr. Gillis is a very good doctor and well informed. He knows you as an individual and remembers your history. He pays attention when you need help and refers you on for the care you need. He respects your wishes and listens to your concerns. Dr. Gillis is diligent about all he does.

Dr. Gillis is a gift--a physician who really cares, who listens carefully, takes time to analyze and respond to concerns and questions, who is thorough and very knowledgeable. I am fortunate and grateful to have been his patient for a long time....and to have been a patient at MCW for decades (even came back from other cities for a few years for my check ups!).
July 23, 2019
The visit was timely and Dr. Gillis was to the point and came up with a diagnosis and a treatment plan.

July 8, 2019
Dr. Gillis has been my primary doctor for a number of years and have been very happy with him as my doctor. I credit him for monitoring my PSA for many years and therefore, was able to determine when elevated and caused me to take further action. I do have prostate cancer being treated by your staff. I feel he listens well and never gives me the feeling of being rushed which I greatly appreciate.

DR Gillis has good "bedside" manner
June 15, 2019
Dr. Gillis is an excellent doctor. He is prepared, always listens, answers questions, is very thoughtful, thorough and knowledgeable. I must add, however, that the frequency of these surveys is a bit overkill. I think it's OK to keep tabs on the quality of service but I have to fill these surveys out much too frequently. I chose Froedtert because of quality of service and they hardly ever let me down.

March 30, 2019
- Reception didn't keep me posted on the delayed of my time assigned. Was going to walk out. After, speaking with Medical Assistant and MD I'm glad I stayed after they called my name and was explained of the delay.- Didn't get to say bye to MD and ask final questions regarding meds.- So, I asked the Medical Assistant and she didn't know and brought a RN in and she wasn't clear either.- I had to tell them twice to change my pharmacy location. Got calls from 2 pharmacies that the same Med was ready for pick up?

The doctor was great. His nurse was unsatisfactory!!! She wore a mask. She forgot to bring my flu shot. When I asked about it, she left in a huff without saying anything. Then came back and said "Roll up your sleeve." Gave me the shot, handed me paperwork, and said I could go.
