The purpose of this PGY1 residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Requirements and Expectations

The following are some of the requirements and expectations for participants in the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital.

  1. Professional Organization Membership
    • American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)
    • Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin (PSW)
  2. Conferences
    • ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting
    • Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference (GLPRC)
    • Milwaukee City Wide Residency Conferences (three/year)
    • PSW Educational Conference and Annual Meeting
  3. Formal Presentations
    • Vizient Resident Poster Presentation at the annual pharmacy meeting at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting
    • GLPRC PowerPoint Presentation
  4. Acute Care Clinical Practice (based on current staffing model, subject to modification)
    • After completing each rotation the resident will staff that area as a decentralized clinical pharmacist for one to two weeks
    • The resident will spend one weekend per month staffing as a central and/or decentralized pharmacist
    • The resident will staff at least one evening shift per month
  5. Departmental Meetings
    • Weekly resident meetings
    • Weekly Academic Afternoon combined with the Froedtert Hospital residency programs
    • Quarterly pharmacy staff meetings
    • Monthly pharmacist meetings
    • Administrative discussions (present at least one)
    • Medication safety discussions
    • Clinical topic discussions
    • Journal clubs/medication use topic discussions (present at least one)
    • Attend one Institutional Review Board (IRB) meeting
    • Hospital or departmental committee meetings, as assigned
  6. Medication Use Activities
    • Completion of a Medication Use Evaluation
    • Completion of a Monograph or Guideline
  7. Adverse Medication Event Review
  8. Licensure
    • Licensed as a pharmacist in the state of Wisconsin within 120 days of start date
  9. Other
    • Minimum 8 hours/day (Monday - Friday)
    • Assist and support department in additional ways as needed
    • Complete assignments and evaluations on a timely basis
    • ACLS certification (classes provided)
    • Participate in recruitment for incoming residency class
    • Precepting of IPPE/APPE rotation students
    • Facilitate MCW School of Pharmacy student lab (at least two)
