The Longitudinal Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (LAPPE) or APPE-Residency Track (RT) Program at Froedtert Hospital was established in 2014. LAPPE students will have the opportunity to learn alongside clinical preceptors who are leaders in their respective areas of practice and are experienced in teaching others to advance their clinical skills and knowledge.

Following completion of the program, students will be competitive candidates for residency or fellowship positions and will be prepared to excel in their post-graduate roles. While Froedtert Hospital has affiliations with the three Schools of Pharmacy in Wisconsin — Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW), Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) — the LAPPE Program is open to any student within an accredited PharmD program.

We offer LAPPE programs at both Froedtert Hospital and Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital. They are two separate programs with separate recruitment and interview processes.

  • Froedtert Hospital is the academic medical center in the Froedtert & MCW health network located within the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center. Froedtert Hospital is a leading referral resource for advanced medical care with over 700 beds and close to 36,000 annual admissions. Program Purpose

Froedtert & MCW health network offers this opportunity to highly motivated students interested in completing a majority of their advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) rotations within our health system. The Froedtert Hospital LAPPE Program mirrors the experience of pharmacy residents and prepares students to pursue residency or work opportunities in large health systems.

Most APPE rotations will take place at Froedtert Hospital or Froedtert & MCW clinic locations. Students will also have the opportunity to complete one experience at either Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital or Froedtert West Bend Hospital.

    Program Objectives

The objectives of the longitudinal APPE program include:

    • Providing students with valuable experiences to build clinical knowledge, develop professional skills, and increase confidence to prepare them for successful residency training and pharmacist positions
    • Facilitating professional networking opportunities to build a group of colleagues to support them throughout their pharmacist careers
    • Acquiring long-term familiarity with F&MCW including technology systems, policy and procedures, medical staff, etc. to become a more proactive contributor to the health system

    Program Activities

Throughout the LAPPE program, students will:

    • Develop and participate in a year-long longitudinal project, including a student poster presentation at a regional or national conference
    • Collaborate with a PGY-1 Pharmacy Resident or PGY-2 Pharmacy Resident on their residency research project.
    • Participate in Drug Use and Disease State Management Program initiatives with Clinical Pharmacy staff (MTM programs, discharge follow-up).
    • Engage in a monthly Residency Preparation session led by various members of the Froedtert pharmacy team.
    • Build a mentor relationship with either a staff pharmacist or current pharmacy resident.
    • Create long-lasting relationships with other pharmacy students, residents and staff via networking opportunities and social events.

    Program Structure

    Rotation Experiences

The program will incorporate the required Acute Care (Medicine or Surgery), Ambulatory Care, and Hospital/Health System Pharmacy APPE rotations, as well as two Elective APPE rotations. Additionally, University of Wisconsin students will complete the required Community Froedtert Hospital rotation within the LAPPE program. LAPPE students will interview for their primary location (Froedtert Hospital and/or Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital). Of note, Froedtert Hospital and Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital are separate LAPPE programs with separate recruitment and interview processes. If selected, they will complete a majority of their required and elective APPE rotations at the primary location. Students may elect to complete ONE required or elective rotation at an alternate site from their primary location still within the Froedtert system.

    Health System Longitudinal Experience

During a non-direct patient care block (administration, central pharmacy operations, etc.), students may participate in an optional experience designed to offer exposure to a unique area in health system pharmacy. The six-week experience is comprised of one half-day per week at the alternate site. Experiences include: Specialty Pharmacy, Investigational Drugs, Discharge in Outpatient Pharmacy, Drug Policy, Antithrombotic Therapy Management, and Toxicology.

    Leadership Opportunities Available

There are several leadership roles available within the LAPPE program.  Students can express interest in these positions through a written submission outlining their desire to serve in the role along with positive attributes that would lead to a successful appointment in the position. LAPPE program leadership will choose the student representatives in advance of the rotation year.

    • Lead LAPPE Student: The Lead LAPPE will work directly with Kristin, Teri, and other pharmacy leaders in coordinating LAPPE experiences and will be the point person for programmatic discussions for student colleagues and Froedtert leadership.
    • LAPPE Social Co-Chairs: There will be 2-3 appointed Social Chairs to focus on ensuring LAPPE students get to know one another and have fun experiences outside of rotations. Social Chairs collaborate to plan activities such as a summer welcome party, networking events with Froedtert Leadership, a Christmas party, and other dinners and get-togethers.
