Emergency Department Highlights

The Froedtert West Bend Hospital Emergency Department is the premier emergency care provider in the Washington County area for the whole family — infants, children and adults. If your situation requires the highest level of emergency care, we provide seamless coordination with eastern Wisconsin's only adult Level I Trauma Center at Froedtert Hospital.

When faced with an urgent medical need, time is critical. The Emergency Care Center at Froedtert West Bend Hospital, a Level III trauma center, has the expert physicians, caregivers and technology to quickly assess and treat your condition.

  • Stroke. Froedtert West Bend Hospital is a Certified Advanced Primary Stroke Center, the highest level of stroke care recognized by the Joint Commission. Our multi-disciplinary team of emergency department specialists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, technicians and more all work together to significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients. Our physicians are able to consult in real-time with board-certified stroke neurologists from Froedtert Hospital.
  • Heart attack. "STEMI" is an abbreviation for "ST-elevation myocardial infarction," the most critical heart attack. Froedtert West Bend Hospital works with local emergency medical services (EMS) providers to ensure that the STEMI Protocol of care is in place as soon as possible when a heart attack is suspected. This means EMS personnel will begin transmitting the patient’s EKG and other information about their heart condition to Froedtert West Bend Hospital’s Emergency Care Center as soon as possible upon arrival at the scene. Based on the information they receive, our ECC staff will advise EMS regarding which hospital is right for the patient’s needs — Froedtert West Bend Hospital or Froedtert Hospital.
  • Sexual assault treatment. When sexual assault happens, it’s important to get compassionate, expert care right away. Our sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) is available 24 hours a day. These registered nurses have advanced training in medical-forensic examination and in the psychological and emotional trauma patients experience — creating a safe haven for sexual assault victims, regardless of your age, gender or ability to pay.
  • Emergency Medical Services partnership. Froedtert West Bend Hospital is medical control for all EMS (emergency medical services) in and around Washington County. In this role, we provide oversight and training for all levels of pre-hospital care including emergency medical responders, EMTs and paramedics.

For help in determining when emergency room care and urgent care are needed for conditions like a heart attack, stroke or other medical emergency, see our Medical Emergency Guide.

The Emergency Department is an active participant in tissue procurement and facilitates organ donation. We are also closely involved with community disaster preparedness, working closely with first responders throughout Washington County.

After Your Emergency Visit

Need follow-up care after an Emergency Department visit? We help our patients find primary care physicians and specialists. We offer many options for primary and specialty care at our health centers and clinics throughout southeastern Wisconsin, including locations in West Bend, Jackson, Hartford and Kewaskum.

Our Emergency Department is staffed by highly-skilled, board-certified emergency medicine physicians, as well as nurses certified in advanced cardiac life support, stroke and trauma care. In addition to providing care for emergency conditions, such as chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe abdominal pain and other common emergency conditions, they offer trauma care for severely injured patients such as those involved in a vehicle crash or a fall.

The combination of next-generation technology and coordinated care between the Emergency Department, heart and vascular services and surgery services allows for high-quality, timely care — all in your community.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continues to recommend masks, social distancing, screening and other precautions for settings like hospitals and health care clinics. For everyone’s safety, all individuals within our facilities will be required to wear a medical-grade face mask.
