From TMJ4 — Officials with the Froedtert & MCW Neuroscience Institute announced a first-of-its-kind traumatic brain injury program is coming to the Wauwatosa-based facility. Its establishment comes after a $12.5 million investment from Avalon Action Alliance, a post-trauma wellness non-profit helping veterans.

From Spectrum News 1 Wisconsin — The team at the adult Level I Trauma Center at Froedtert Hospital said they are seeing an increase in patients coming in with stab wounds, gunshot wounds and injuries from being in a car crash or being hit by a car. “Basically in 2020, as a result of COVID, the numbers of traumas and specifically the penetrating traumas like gunshot wounds or stabbings that went significantly high,” said Marc De Moya, MD, chief of trauma surgery.

Kim Lombard, injury prevention and outreach coordinator, says there are critical moments that can mean the difference between life and death if someone has a bleeding injury like from a car crash or gunshot wound.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel — Gee's Clippers barbershop hosted a free skin, hair and nail screening event on Saturday, Feb. 4, sponsored by Froedtert & MCW health network. Staff from Froedtert Hospital was there to perform screenings and answer questions.

From TMJ4 — In 2019, Jasmine Johnikin, a nurse at Froedtert Hospital, made a commitment to save lives when she graduated from nursing school. During the pandemic, Johnikin realized she had a passion for mentoring youth and launched As I Am Mentoring Inc. in June 2022. It's a mentorship program designed to help kids realize their purpose in life and give them a voice.

From Spectrum News 1 Wisconsin — Linda Lavold found out she had breast cancer in 2020. She said it was something she never thought she would go through. Amanda Kong, MD, Froedtert & MCW oncologist, worked to get Linda into a clinical trial where her radiation before surgery was done with the Elekta Unity MR-linac machine. The trial was able to cut down the amount of times she had to go in for treatment by less than half. For Lavold, that meant a lot to her so she could continue her active lifestyle.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel — When Caidence Carnes had to have radiation therapy for a brain tumor, Courtney Shanmugabaskaran, a radiation therapist at Froedtert Hospital, made it a little easier with a personalized radiation mask modeled on Caidence's favorite Power Ranger.

From Spectrum News 1 Wisconsin — The American Thyroid Association said thyroid cancer is less common compared to other cancers like breast or colon. In 2021, 44,000 people were diagnosed with it. While it’s a less common cancer, Beth Madecky is still living with the diagnosis. Becky and her doctor, Gil Fareau, MD, Froedtert & MCW endocrinologist, talked about the disease and its treatment.

From Wisconsin Health News — The Milwaukee Anchor Collaborative is made up of major health systems and educational institutions that set goals this fall to collectively increase purchasing with businesses owned by people of color.
