From Spectrum News 1 — In just about two years, the Froedtert & MCW Cancer Network will be home to the first location where proton therapy will be available to Wisconsinites battling cancer. Christopher Schultz, MD, FACR, FASTRO, chair and professor in the department of radiation oncology, spoke with Spectrum News 1 about this more advanced and targeted way to treat patients with cancer.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel — The Froedtert & MCW health network are on pace to begin offering a next-level form of cancer treatment to patients as soon as August. Earlier this month, a two-year-long construction project to build a proton therapy clinic inside Froedtert Hospital took a significant step toward completion when the final components of the cancer-treating system − an accelerator and two mechanical arms each weighing 15 tons − were dropped through the roof of the hospital and into a 28-foot tall by 37-foot wide, radiation-proof room. The system provides precision treatment from every angle with 190-degree rotating mechanical arms that are mounted to an accelerator. The patient lies flat on a bed and the device moves to an angle that best aims proton beams at their tumor.

From TMJ4 — The Froedtert & MCW the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Network will begin providing an advanced form of cancer treatment later this year. The new Proton Therapy Clinic under construction at Froedtert Hospital is slated to be the first in the state. Proton therapy is a form of radiation that sends a targeted dose to a tumor precisely and stops, helping prevent exposure to nearby critical organs and tissues. This method works to prevent complications and secondary cancers.
