The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Sports Performance and Fitness Training Program offers personalized plans and assistance for:

  • Individual athletes and teams wanting to improve speed, increase power, improve overall fitness and performance and prevent injuries.
  • People who have recently completed physical therapy and want a personalized program to continue their progress.

Milwaukee Organizations Benefit from Athletic Trainers

Our team works with a variety of clients, from youth athletes to older adults, regardless of fitness level, helping people reach their fitness and performance goals.

“Sometimes, with younger athletes, their bones grow quicker than their muscles can keep up, and it strains different joints,” said Duane Mueller, licensed athletic trainer.

Trainers also work with sports teams, including Street Dreams Soccer Academy in Milwaukee, an organization that offers affordable club soccer to low-income families.

“Not every school has the same access to staff like athletic trainers,” Mueller said. “If I can teach kids how their bodies work earlier, they’ll be more successful and have longer athletic careers.”

Custom Programs Available to Meet Individual Goals

Athletic trainers also work with adults to create programs tailored to individual goals, like returning to exercise after pregnancy. Specialty services include a runners’ clinic; golf performance clinic; sports performance nutrition; bike fitting; and VO2 max testing, which measures the amount of oxygen the body uses during exercise. Flexible self-pay options allow clients to train one-on-one, in a small group or as a team.

Unlike personal trainers in a gym, athletic trainers within the Sports Performance and Fitness Training Program work closely with physical therapists and physicians in the same facility.

“I constantly communicate with physicians and physical therapists down the hall,” Mueller said. “When physical therapists have clients transitioning to me, I can build on the progress the client has already made.”

Trainers use their expertise not only to help clients improve their fitness, but also to prevent injuries.

“Because of my background in athletic training, I always look for asymmetries and try to address them before they become a problem,” Mueller said. “I explain to people what professional athletes do behind the scenes to stay fit — and how they can apply those techniques to their own training regimens.”
