Through the City of Milwaukee’s “Firefighter for a Day” program, they participated in hands-on drills and real-world scenarios. Activities included learning to extract patients using the Jaws of Life®, a hydraulic tool used to extricate people from vehicles crushed in accidents; creating access points in burning buildings with axes; climbing ladders and entering through windows; and carrying a hose up flights of stairs to extinguish a live fire – all while wearing heavy protective gear.

The day highlighted the intense physical and mental demands the job requires. It provided valuable insights that strengthens how occupational health supports firefighters through injury rehabilitation, return-to-work planning and strength and conditioning programs.

Dr. Blonien partners with City of Milwaukee Fire Department, reviewing job-specific screenings for a safe and healthy onboarding of new firefighters, health education and work injuries. As a registered dietitian and health coach, Christine provides on-site nutrition counseling for the department, keeping firefighters fueled and strong for their next call.

Christine said the experience was both “eye-opening and inspiring,” sharing that working alongside the team she serves deepened her appreciation for the dedication it takes to keep Milwaukee safe and reinforced how closely our work aligns with theirs.

Thank you, Milwaukee Fire Department, for this great opportunity!
