Summer is now in full swing and we are entering its hottest days. This comes with an awareness reminder that heat-related illness risks exist for both outdoor and indoor workers. High ambient temperatures, humidity, radiant heat sources and exertion contribute to heat stress, even inside warehouses, manufacturing facilities, kitchens, etc. Without appropriate controls, heat exposure can quickly progress from mild symptoms like rash or cramping to life-threatening illness, making prevention a top priority.

Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Standard

Currently, OSHA does not have a finalized heat-specific standard but employers are required to protect workers from heat hazards under the General Duty Clause. OSHA is developing a dedicated Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Standard to formalize requirements for hazard assessment and response. While this rule is still in development, OSHA has reinforced its focus on heat injury through an updated National Emphasis Program (NEP) that targets high-risk industries and emphasizes proactive heat illness prevention measures.

Effective heat injury prevention depends on appropriate controls and shared responsibility. For employers, this includes written heat illness prevention programs, access to cool drinking water, scheduling rest breaks in shaded/cooled areas, modifying work schedules, training supervisors to recognize early symptoms and establishing emergency response procedures. For workers, best practices include maintaining hydration, pacing activity during heat exposure, using rest breaks, wearing breathable or cooling personal protective equipment (PPE) when feasible and promptly reporting symptoms.

Heat-Related Illnesses

Heat-related illness spans a spectrum of symptoms. Early symptoms may include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, headache and nausea (heat exhaustion). Without intervention, this can lead to heat stroke, a medical emergency characterized by altered mental status, seizures, loss of consciousness or cessation of sweating. Immediate cooling and emergency medical care are critical in suspected heat stroke cases, which can be lifesaving and should be emphasized in all workplace training programs.
