Sometimes you need care quickly and getting to the doctor’s office is not always easy — or desirable during virus season. Virtual care options, through the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network, provide a convenient alternative.

Virtual care by video is offered in two ways:

  • On-demand video visits offer access to care within minutes, seven days a week, for minor illnesses. No appointment is needed.
  • Scheduled video visits are scheduled in advance with a member of your primary care team or a specialist.

Amy Miller, MD, chief medical officer for primary care and family medicine physician, along with Kimberly Gecsi, MD, chief medical officer for specialty practice, gynecologist and MCW faculty member, answer common questions about video visits.

Q: What are video visits? What are the benefits?

Dr. Miller: Video visits are a way to connect with a doctor or care team member virtually to discuss a health issue. A video visit can be done from the comfort of your home. Patients can often be seen faster because doctors and care team members have time blocked out on their schedules for this type of virtual care. There are also benefits for the care team. It allows us to see the patient and gives us more insight into their health when compared to a phone call.

Dr. Gecsi: For specialty care, video visits offer additional privacy, particularly for behavioral health concerns. It can be more convenient for people who might otherwise need to drive far distances to consult a specialist or who have mobility issues. Around 11% of the health network’s visits occur over a video screen.

Q: How do you schedule a video visit? What technology do you need?

Dr. Miller: The easiest way is through the Froedtert & MCW app. Appointments can be booked through your MyChart account or online at froedtert.com/virtual. A Wi-Fi connection or stable cell service is needed. We use the same technology as a Zoom meeting for video visits. Smartphones tend to work best, but tablets or computers with audio and video capabilities also work.

Dr. Gecsi: Your privacy is important to us. Our virtual visits are conducted through a secure connection in a private space.

Q: What type of health issues can be addressed via video?

Dr. Miller: Follow-up care for chronic diseases, including high blood pressure and diabetes, lends itself well to video visits. Many acute conditions can also be seen virtually, including pink eye, rashes and colds. Virtual care works well for anxiety, depression, attention deficit disorder and other behavioral health issues.

Dr. Gecsi: For conditions that require specialty care, video appointments can be a good option for postoperative care, new patient consultations, second opinions, and reviewing imaging and lab tests.

Q: Can anyone schedule a video visit?

Dr. Miller: You don’t need to be a current Froedtert & MCW patient to make a virtual care appointment. However, due to medical licensing, we can only do video visits for people in Wisconsin. You can’t do a virtual visit while you’re on vacation out of state.

Q: How much does it cost?

Dr. Miller: Our on-demand video visits, which offer same-day treatment for minor health issues, are $49 per visit. Scheduled video visits with a Froedtert & MCW doctor are billed through the same process as an in-person visit. Most major insurances are accepted. It is important to verify coverage with your insurance company prior to having any service.
