As physicians, Bindiya and I have spent our lives caring for patients. But I find myself thinking about this from another perspective too.
One day, I won’t be the doctor in the room. I may be the patient. And when that day comes, I know exactly what l’ll hope for.
I hope that the person caring for me is skilled, compassionate, well trained, and deeply committed to the same calling. I hope that somewhere along their journey, someone believed in them, supported them, and helped make that path possible. That is why this Scholarship Program feels so personal to us because it is our community.
We both understand how long and demanding the journey into health care can be. It takes discipline, sacrifice, and heart. We also know the financial burden can be significant. We didn’t receive scholarships during medical school, so we know how meaningful that support can be for someone trying to reach their dream. And that is exactly what this program does. It opens doors for students who are pursuing careers in medicine, nursing, therapy, and so many other health care professions. It helps relieve financial pressure, but it also does something more. It tells them: we believe in you.
We believe in your future. We believe in your ability to serve others. And we believe in the difference you will make. When I think about the scholarship recipients, I do not just see students. I see the nurse who may sit at my bedside one day and explain things with patience and kindness. I see the therapist who may help one of us recover a er surgery. I see the physician, pharmacist, or technician who may someday care for Bindiya, for me, for our children, for our friends, or for any one of us in this room. That is what makes this so real.
By giving, we are not just helping someone else’s future. In many ways, we are investing in our own. And that is such a beautiful thing. A scholarship is not just financial help. It is encouragement. It is hope. It is a reminder to a student that their community is standing beside them, believing in them every step of the way.
In many ways, the Scholarship Program is about honoring those who came before us and cared for this community with skill and compassion.
We remember Dr. Robb Edwards and Dr. Chukwuma Ugwu, physicians at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital, who passed away in recent years, with deep gratitude and respect. Their service, compassion, and dedication made a lasting difference in the lives of so many patients and families.
And we also acknowledge many other physicians and caregivers who are remembered in the hearts of those they served and those who worked beside them. Their legacy lives on in this hospital, in this community, and in the standard of care they helped create.
Through the Scholarship Program, we have the chance to help the next generation carry that mission forward.
