Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect tissues in the nose, throat and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness and sometimes leads to death.

Different flu viruses circulate every year. Getting an annual flu vaccine is the best way to prevent flu and its complications.

There are additional steps you can take to help reduce the spread of flu and other highly contagious viruses:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • If you are sick, limit contact with others.  The Centers for Disease Control recommends you stay home until your symptoms resolve and you have not had fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication) for 24 hours
  • Helpful habits include washing your hands frequently, cleaning surfaces often, covering coughs and sneezes, wearing a mask and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
