Cancer Clinical Trials

Cancer treatment is complex and constantly evolving. Cancer clinical trials provide more treatment options and opportunities to help fuel cancer treatment discovery. Sameem Abedin, MD, medical oncologist, is here to tell us more.

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a test of a new treatment which could be a new drug, surgical procedure, radiation procedure or lifestyle intervention. A clinical trial is looking to see if a new treatment could have less side effects or is more effective than what's currently available. If a trial shows that a treatment is more effective and safer, this may lead to an FDA approval which means a new option would be available for patients.

Why should someone consider a clinical trial as part of their treatment?

A clinical trial may represent the best treatment option for a patient. Sometimes, treatments could have a lot of side effects to it. Sometimes treatments are less effective than they may want, and so a clinical trial may offer an opportunity to get something more effective. A clinical trial also allows for participation in a study that can allow for new treatments to be given to patients in the future.
