The Importance of a Yearly Checkup
Today, we're talking about something that affects all of us — staying on top of our health. Joining us is Dr. Theresa Maatman, a primary care physician here to explain why yearly checkups and routine screenings are key to catching issues early and keeping us feeling our best.
Why are yearly checkups so important?
It's important that we have an opportunity to see our patients, do physical exams and do some testing on them on a regular basis, so that we can prevent things. We also counsel them so that we can catch things early and help them make changes in their life, so that things will be better in the future.
What can people expect during a yearly checkup and which screenings are most common?
It really depends on their age, their gender, their health, that sort of thing. Typically, there are cancer screenings, often there's blood testing, but the guidelines are really made for populations, not an individual person. And our patients are individual people, so it's really important that they go talk to their doctor about what's right specifically for them.
What are the advantages of choosing care with the Froedtert & MCW health network?
Our primary care physicians are affiliated with the academic health network, and we have access to many specialists should any problems arise or we need to get extra help with a patient's care. We also have virtual options, which are very convenient for patients, and we have easy scheduling for patients, so it's easy for them to get in to see us.
