Infusion Therapy: What It Is and How It Works
From fighting infections to delivering nutrition, advances in science are making it possible and easier for more and more patients to get advanced treatments through infusion therapy. Here to tell us more about this growing approach to treatment is Brian Kondro, a clinical services business liaison with Froedtert Home and Specialty Infusion.
What is infusion therapy?
Infusion therapy is the administration of a medication or antibiotic, nutrition, specialty medication intravenously, which means it goes directly into the bloodstream. These medications can be administered in either the home setting or one of our specialty infusion suites.
When is infusion therapy used?
Infusion therapy is used when other forms of treatment may not be appropriate. It may be used in the instance of a severe infection where it's required to receive a long-term IV antibiotic, or when a patient is no longer to eat normally or absorb nutrients, or to treat specialty diseases such as ulcerative colitis, which affects the digestive system.
Why should someone choose Froedtert infusion therapy services?
There are many reasons. Number one is that we offer the ability for patients to receive service in the home setting or at one of our specialized infusion suites. We have six current locations ranging from Oshkosh to the metro Milwaukee area, south to Kenosha. Our staff is highly trained and skilled at providing these infusion services and, again, patients depending upon the medication and their health condition, may receive the service in their home setting as well.
