Transplant Team Saves Two Lives with One Liver

On May 21, 2013, transplant surgeons performed the first situ split-liver transplant in Wisconsin, and two patients received a portion of a liver from one deceased donor. Johnny C. Hong, MD, transplant surgeon and MCW faculty member, performed the surgery. Because of the liver’s unique ability to regenerate or regrow itself once it is inside the recipient, two patients received the gift of life from the same donor.
