What Volunteers Do
At Froedtert Hospital, volunteers help create an atmosphere of friendliness and goodwill which improves our patients’ experience. Our volunteers bring a greater personal dimension to the care and service of patients, families and visitors, and hospital staff.
Volunteers who serve on patient floors or in clinical areas assist hospital staff with patient comfort such as engaging in conversation, answering call buttons, and helping during mealtime. They may also put away supplies, fill blanket warmers and/or help with special requests.
Volunteers who serve in other areas of the hospital assist staff with patient communication, patient way finding, special projects and administrative work.
We find our volunteers are willing to do whatever is needed, regardless of where they serve.
Volunteer Expectations
We require our volunteers to contribute a minimum of 80 hours within 6 consecutive months. Volunteers typically contribute 3-4 hours, one day a week.
We do NOT offer temporary volunteer service such as:
- Summer only
- Christmas break
- Mandated community service
- One-time only opportunities
We are an adult teaching hospital and our volunteers provide service to patients over 18 years of age. Here are the requirements:
- High School Students: You must be at least 16 years old. Minors under the age of 18 are restricted to volunteering in the Bobbe’s Gift Shop.
- College Students: You must be at least 18 years old and able to commit to volunteering on a regular basis. We have many opportunities for students attending Milwaukee-area colleges and universities who are seeking experience in a healthcare environment.
- Adults: You must be at least 18 years old and able to commit to volunteering on a regular basis.
Opportunities
Volunteer opportunities at Froedtert Hospital are available seven days a week, in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Flexible scheduling can be arranged, but the typical volunteer contributes his/her time one day a week for three to four hours.
