Froedtert Hospital Birth Center Virtual Tour
Welcome to the Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Birth Center. We apologize that we are not able to offer you a tour in person. However, we would like to take this opportunity to address how we can best care for you, your baby, your family and our staff.
At this time, visitor restrictions for the birth center are outlined here.
The Froedtert Hospital Birth Center is located in Children's Hospital Wisconsin in Milwaukee, which gives us immediate access to the best care in southeastern Wisconsin.
- Labor and delivery is located on the eighth floor.
- The mom-baby unit is located on the seventh floor along with our special care nursery.
- The Maternal-Fetal Newborn Unit is located on the sixth floor.
Being located in Children's Hospital means that we have immediate access to the neonatal intensive care unit. Our birth center cares for both high-risk and low-risk obstetrical patients.
If you feel it is time to come into the birth center for any obstetrical-related concern, please call your care team. They will help determine if you need to be seen in labor and delivery. When arriving at the birth center, please present to the Froedtert Hospital Adult Emergency Department entrance. This is located off of 87th Street. We have valet parking for your convenience.
Labor and delivery has four triage assessment rooms. You will be seen in the triage area by a team member to determine the next steps in your plan of care.
There are 12 labor rooms located on the eighth floor. Rooms are private and have the following amenities:
- Labor bed
- Shower with sit-down bench
- Basic cable
- DVD player
- Birthing balls
- Peanut balls
- Wireless internet access
- Couch
- Recliner
Labor and delivery has a whirlpool tub available for use by patients. Please consult with your care team to see if this is an amenity you are eligible to use based on your clinical scenario.
There are many pain control options available to you during labor. These options include:
- Breathing and relaxation techniques
- Labor position techniques
- IV pain medication
- Epidural
You will have an opportunity to meet with an anesthesiologist to discuss the option of having an epidural.
During labor, most moms are allowed to eat a clear, liquid diet. We will help direct your family and friends to use our guest menu or to cafeterias located throughout our campus. We strive to meet your cultural and spiritual practices. Let us know if you have any dietary considerations.
When your baby is born, your care team will be at your bedside along with additional personnel as needed to provide the safest care to you and your baby. Please note that only photography is allowed in the delivery room, which means no videotaping.
Our obstetric and anesthesia teams are ready to handle any emergency 24 hours a day. We have three centrally located operating rooms and three recovery rooms in the labor and delivery unit. After delivery, you will be moved to the sixth or seventh floor until you and your baby are discharged. You and your baby will stay in your room together. One support person may spend the night with you. They must be older than 18 years old. There is a recliner and a couch in all rooms.
Patients should plan to stay 1 to 2 days following a vaginal delivery and 3 days following a cesarean delivery. Here at Froedtert Hospital, we promote and encourage rooming in and skin-to-skin contact. Practicing both will facilitate bonding with your newborn. In addition, both have been shown to increase the success of breastfeeding. All of the nursing staff have been trained to assist you with breastfeeding and answer any questions you may have. We also have internationally board-certified lactation consultants on staff who are available for patients with additional needs.
We have a Level 2 special care nursery located on the seventh floor of the birth center, which is staffed by pediatricians from Children's Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin. We can care for infants as young as 32 weeks or those who need further monitoring. If your baby is in the special care nursery, you're encouraged to participate in your baby's care. Should you be discharged before your baby, we have two guest rooms available for parents to stay in overnight. Your discharge nurse will coordinate this with you at the time of your discharge.
Remember to choose your pediatrician prior to coming to the birth center. You will need to have a pediatrician chosen before your baby will be discharged. If you do not have a pediatrician chosen at the time you deliver, the nursing staff or social workers will work with you to choose one. After your baby is discharged, your baby will need to be seen within two to three days by the pediatrician.
If you need to be in the hospital during your pregnancy, you would be admitted to the Maternal-Fetal Newborn Unit located on the sixth floor. The nurses here will provide you with fetal monitoring and other necessary care based on your medical diagnosis. When it's time for your baby to be born, you'll be transferred to the labor and delivery unit on the eighth floor. The staff will be ready to safely care for you and welcome your baby into the world.
We look forward to caring for you and your family. Thank you for choosing the Froedtert Hospital Birth Center.
