In addition, our Level II special care nurseries at each of our birth centers allow many premature babies to receive supportive care close to home.

Froedtert Hospital Special Care Nursery and Children’s Wisconsin NICU in Milwaukee

The Froedtert Hospital Level II special care nursery, located in our Mother-Baby Unit, offers a higher level of care to babies who need a little bit of extra help — such as oxygen or IV antibiotics. Staff members are available 24/7 to help parents learn how to support and care for their infants.

Babies who need advanced medical support receive care at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Children’s Wisconsin, located in the same building as our Birth Center. This NICU is the largest level IV NICU in Wisconsin, with 70 private rooms.

Special Care Nursery at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital

The Level II special care nursery at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital was the first special care unit in Wisconsin to have private rooms. All the details of these rooms have been researched extensively for their benefits to premature and at-risk infants. 

As a Level II nursery, Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital’s special care nursery is staffed by Medical College of Wisconsin neonatology specialists 24/7 who provide care for babies born at or after 32 weeks of pregnancy.

Froedtert West Bend Hospital Special Care Nursery in West Bend

Froedtert West Bend Hospital's Level I special care nursery offers a higher level of care to newborns who need additional attention, such as for babies who are less than full-term (35 weeks) or low birth weight.

Neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) are part of our Birth Center team. These highly trained specialists, mostly from Children’s Wisconsin, will attend every birth during off hours to provide specialized medical services such as intubation and assistance in the special care nursery. Our board-certified pediatric providers provide these services during regular business hours.

The special care nursery is accessible to our neonatology specialists who provide care for infants needing extra attention. Medical transportation services for infants are provided by Children's Wisconsin.
