Need care right away?
Why You Need Primary Care
- A go-to care team when you’re sick: If you have a new symptom, infection or concern, your primary care doctor or clinician is usually the first person you contact.
- Management of ongoing conditions: For chronic issues like diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure or anxiety, a primary care doctor or clinician helps monitor and manage your care over time.
- Care coordination: If you need a specialist, imaging or lab tests, we help coordinate referrals and make sure all parts of your care work together.
- Personalized care: Over time, we get to know your medical history, medications, lifestyle and goals—so care is tailored to you, not just your symptoms.
- Health advice you can trust: They can answer questions about diet, exercise, stress, sleep, medications and preventive screenings based on your age and risk factors.
- Lower costs and fewer emergencies: People with a regular primary care doctor or clinician often have fewer emergency visits and better long-term health outcomes.

Family Medicine vs. Internal Medicine vs. Pediatrics vs. OB/GYN
While all four medical specialties provide essential primary care, their differences lie primarily in their patient age range, gender, scope of practice and training focus.
Family Medicine
Provide care to patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors. Scope and training are broad and generalized — covering a wide array of general health needs across the entire lifespan. Emphasizes holistic, family-oriented care. They can provide primary care for an entire family.
Internal Medicine
Typically treat adults, from 18 years onward. Focuses on the complex medical issues and chronic conditions that affect adult health. Training is deep and specialized within adult medicine. Takes a science-based, diagnostic approach.
Pediatrics
Practice is dedicated to the health and development of children and adolescents, typically from birth to age 18 or 21. Focus is on developmental aspects, preventive care and fostering a child-friendly environment for young patients and their families.
OB/GYN
Obstetricians and gynecologists provide primary and specialized care for people with female reproductive organs. Scope includes reproductive health, pregnancy and childbirth, menstrual disorders, contraception, menopause care and preventive screenings such as Pap tests.

Your Froedtert & MCW Primary Care Team
At the Froedtert & MCW health network, your primary care is delivered by a team working together to support your health.
- Doctors (physicians) lead your care and manage both routine and complex health needs. They diagnose conditions, create care plans, manage chronic illnesses and coordinate specialty care when needed.
- Advanced practice providers (APPs) — including nurse practitioners and physician assistants — provide many of the same day-to-day services. They offer preventive care, treat common illnesses, manage stable conditions and help answer your health questions.
Working Together for You
Your care team communicates and collaborates to make sure you get the right care at the right time. You may see different members of the team for different visits, but they work together behind the scenes to ensure seamless, high-quality care. This team-based approach helps improve access to appointments, gives you more time with your doctor or clinician and supports better long-term health.
